La Traviata

I feel extremely excited to announce our first opera of the season, La Traviata. I dreamed about presenting this ingenious Verdi drama for a long time. This heart - rending opera about a Parisian courtesan with a sordid past and no future features some of the composer's most ravishing and popular music. Our La Traviata will feature soprano Amy Call as Violetta, who you may remember as our incredible Konstanza of the last season’s Abduction from the Seraglio. Another Violetta and a new name in town, blind soprano Jessica Bachicha will “open your eyes” to the tragic soul of Verdi’s romantic heroine. Four concert performances of La Traviata are scheduled at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and at the Embassy of Austria in the District of Colombia from December 6th through 13th

Music By Giuseppe Verdi, Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. After La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils. TA concert performance, in Italian, accompanied by the strings and piano.

Little Red Riding Hood

We continue to develop our tradition of presenting an opera for children and families. This year it will be Seymour Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood. This delightful adaptation of the classic fairy tale by the brothers Grimm, is a great way to expose children to the magic of opera. Performances will be presented at the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab, a smaller, 200-seat intimate black box at the Olney Theatre Center, January 3rd through 11th. Each performance will start with an interactive game-introduction between the audience, stage director Debbie Niezgoda and magic personages: your favorites from previous seasons, Meghan McCall, Bryan Jackson and Jessica Renfro. We encourage all children from the age of 6 to 99 to come and enjoy this wonderful production. Sung in English, in costume. Piano accompaniment.

Red Riding Hood: Meghan McCall, Mother / Grandmother: Jessica Renfro, Wolf / Woodsman: Bryan Jackson.

Donizetti's wittiest opera tells of an old man who decides to cheat his nephew out of his inheritance by marrying a much younger girl. I am proud to announce the success of Bel Cantanti Summer Opera Theater, our new Young Artist program that piloted in California this August. We are hoping to launch the Washington area program next summer that will benefit many young artists in our region. I see this program as an extension of Bel Cantanti Opera’s mission to hire and train local area artists.  The success of the program was due to the hard work of the organizers and the generous support of our donors.

Bel Cantanti Summer Opera Theater (BCSOT): July 18 through August, 3, 2008.

After the first five successful years in Washington D.C. Bel Cantanti Opera had its first summer program in San Jose and San Francisco, California. Two weeks of intensive vocal training, rehearsals and master classes resulted in two operatic productions: E. Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel and V. Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi.

BCSOT Faculty: Katerina Souvorova, Artistic Director/ Vocal Coach; Peter Kozma, Stage Director; Courtney Ross, Artistic Coordinator.
